LOTC Reflections: Winter Faith Exploration

Founder and Head of School, Jason Kreutner, shares:
On the final school day before Winter Break, we always explore houses of worship.
Yesterday, we explored Mother Emanuel AME Church and benefitted from a compelling presentation and question and answer session with long-time member Willie Glee. It was a poignant experience, especially for our older students who toured here with Pastor Clementa Pinckney in 2012.
We also visited the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house in West Ashley to learn more about Mormonism. We especially enjoyed seeing USL alum (MS ’10) Sierra Zardus and her mom, Mary Johnston!
Learning first-hand about faiths and talking to their adherents helps prepare our students to be better informed citizens of the community and the world.  Exploring two houses of worship in one day allows the students to compare and contrast, and it enables us to think about the ways in which people in a society organize themselves.  As Americans, we enjoy freedom of religious expression, and it is an insightful lesson to see this in practice with our own eyes.
It was a profoundly educational and interesting last day of the semester.
