Competitive athletics can bestow many valuable lessons upon participants, and the benefits of regular exercise are extensive. USL follows the principles set forth in Dr. John Ratey’s work, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, which offers research that students learn best by beginning the day with vigorous exercise.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION & EXERCISE
Each USL student participates in PE during first or second period every day. Exercise is also built into our daily routine as students regularly walk to educational resources and opportunities in the areas around USL’s campus. Our Physical Education and Health classes strive to promote individual fitness, sportsmanship, and good health while encouraging lifelong recreational interests.
COMPETITIVE & RECREATIONAL ATHLETICS
While USL does not directly offer athletic opportunities for students, we believe that important personal growth takes place in these arenas. Our community is blessed with an extensive and diverse list of organizations that provide these opportunities. USL students currently take part in baseball, basketball, dance, football, golf, lacrosse, skateboarding, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and track & field, and many compete at the highest level, including regional and state competitions.
The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department organizes and administers leagues for many sports for adolescents and teenagers, and University School supports organized athletics through sponsorship of MPRD teams. MPRD has been recognized as one of most comprehensive and best recreation departments in the southeast region.
